As a small business it can be challenging to manage your energy consumption on top of your other daily concerns. And with rising energy prices, pressures to become more "green," and scarce spare time to compare utility bills, an easy-to-use online tool may be your answer.
The Pennsylvania SBDC is providing this energy management tool to its clients free-of-charge. All you need to do is enter your electricity, gas, and/or water bills, and GreenQuest calculates and visually represents your energy and water use. It is a great tool to help you track and benchmark your consumption before and after big and small changes -- like window replacements, CFL substitutions, weatherization improvements, or a new HVAC installation. In addition, it allows you to see the payback period for these new technologies.
GreenQuest also uses "automated benchmarking," an EPA web-based data exchange system, to send energy and building data to EPA in exchange for ENERGY STAR ratings. While it is similar to EPA's Portfolio Manager tool, GreenQuest offers a different and easy interface. Ultimately, the information that you enter into this tool can help you create a solid case for DEP grants and other funding applications.
